BUTLER — The Carter County Sheriff’s Department was investigating a report of man being shot in the chest Wednesday night.
According to radio traffic about 9:15 p.m., a man in the parking lot of the Elk Mills General Store reportedly had been shot at near point-blank range. The type of weapon used in the incident was not known. Sheriff Chris Mathes said the shooting was the culmination of an incident that started elsewhere.
The man was being transported by ambulance to Sycamore Shoals Hospital in Elizabethton. Wings Air Rescue was unable to respond to the scene due to bad weather.
