Congratulations go to the Lady Cyclones for winning the Class AA state basketball tournament Saturday night in Murfreesboro. With the 66-52 victory over Knox Fulton, Elizabethton High School secured the first-ever girls state basketball title for a team from the Tri-Cities region. As Press sports writer Douglas Fritz reported, the Lady Cyclones did not lose a game all season to a AA team and ended play for the year with a record of 32-3. The championship was a long time in coming for fans of Elizabethton High. Saturday’s victory represents the first major-sport state championship for the Cyclones since the 1938 football team.Obviously, the championship was a team effort. Even so, as Fritz wrote in a story that appeared in Sunday’s paper, the Marosites twins — sophomores Kayla and Kelci — may have been the “architects of the new-found state tournament success” of the Cyclones. In the game against Fulton, the twins combined for 38 points, 20 rebounds, four assists, four steals and 11-of-13 shooting from the foul line.It was fitting that Kayla Marosites was chosen as most valuable player of that game following a 23-point, 12-rebound evening. Again, our congrats go out to all the Lady Cyclones on their remarkable championship season.
