ELIZABETHTON — A woman was charged this week on accusations that she broke into a neighbor's residence and stole boxes containing personal items.

Deborah Ann Scott, 154 Melody Lane, Lot 2, was charged with aggravated burglary, resisting arrest and vandalism. She is scheduled to answer the charges in Sessions Court on July 9.

Scott was accused of breaking into the residence of Misty Marie Shaffer, who lived at Lot 3. Shaffer told Deputy Matt Ainsworth of the Carter County Sheriff's Department that she was in the process of moving and had left to drive to Ellizabethton at 11 a.m. on Monday. When she returned, she found someone had damaged the front window of her trailer in an attempt to get inside. She said three boxes of personal items were missing. Shaffer told Ainsworth that Scott admitted to being the one who had been inside her home.

Ainsworth went to Scott's residence. He said Scott told him "come on in, I don't have no boxes." Ainsworth said he later learned that Scott believed she had permission to go inside and take anything Shaffer had left.

Ainsworth attempted to arrest Scott but found her to be intoxicated and became "dead weight" when he tried to move her. Rather than risk injuring her, he issued a citation in lieu of an arrest.
