State investigators said Monday that a man accused last week of stealing the personal information of hundreds of teachers in the Nashville area may have also compromised data of Johnson City Power Board employees.
The Tennessee Department of Treasury said the former employee, Steven Hunter, accessed a Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System file containing personal information about active JCPB employees and downloaded information to a personal email address at an unencrypted personal computer.
Hunter was arrested last week and charged with identity theft trafficking as part of an investigation into accusations that he illegally downloaded the personal information of Metro Nashville teachers.
Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agents seized his personal computer and other electronic devices in a raid on his home and allegedly discovered the teachers’ data.
The TBI said that after further examination, the file containing JCPB employee information was also discovered on his computer.
A Dec. 20 press release from the TBI states that the agency believes Hunter was not able to pass along any of the personal information he allegedly obtained to a second party.
As a precaution, the state Treasury Department will be offering free credit monitoring services to the affected employees.
