A longtime tradition of the holiday season in Northeast Tennessee, Rocky Mount offers a glimpse of Christmas in territorial Tennessee circa 1791, when the impending birth of the Christ-child was the focus of the celebration rather than the stimulus for a shopping frenzy.
This year’s Candlelight Christmas at Rocky Mount will be held on four special nights –– tonight, Saturday and then again on Dec.13 and 14.
Families will be greeted by the Cobb Family and possibly by the Governor of the Southwest Territory, William Blount and Mrs. Blount, recently arrived from North Carolina and anxious to meet and become familiar with their newly made friends.
The entire site is adorned with decorations of the season as participants step back into a time now less common, but not lost to memory. Rocky Mount invites you to be caught up in the sights and smells that are becoming a tradition to many returning visitors and to the new found friends these four evenings in December.
The festivities begin each evening at 4:30 and continue until the last revelers start their visit at 8. Tour groups of approximately 15 people leave the Visitor Center upon the journey back to 1791 every 15 minutes. The visit takes about an hour and a half, and a reception immediately follows.
The cost is $10 for adults and $7 for children 5 and older. Group rates are available for groups of 12 or more. Member discounts are also available.
Reservations are strongly advised as interest grows every year and walk-ins are welcomed.
