As Press Sports writer Joe Avento reported last month, East Tennessee State University officials would like to see more basketball games played at Freedom Hall. The city-owned civic center has proven to be good luck for the men’s basketball team, which won all three of the games it was scheduled to play there this season.ETSU has explored playing the remainder of the team’s home schedule at Freedom Hall. ETSU Athletic Director Richard Sander told Avento the “logistics” would have to work to make it possible.“If we do it, we’re gonna have to do it,” Sander said. “It’s not like we can bounce back for a Thursday game at Freedom Hall and a Saturday game at the Dome.”It’s that lack of continuity that makes it unlikely ETSU will play the rest of its season at Freedom Hall. That’s a shame because we think the idea of round ball in the Hall is a good one. And it is definitely something the university and ETSU officials should make happen next season. It makes perfect sense for both the city and the university. The city would collect money for the facility’s use and ETSU fans would finally be able to watch the Bucs play in a facility more conducive for basketball.
