Johnson City police investigators found articles of clothing along a route between an attempted convenience store holdup and the location where two people were arrested that matched the suspects’ clothes, according to a court document.
Robert Fulwiler, 32, and Morgan Scheidt, 21, both of 293 Austin Springs Road, No. 75, were each charged with aggravated robbery after the incident at Scotchman, 149 S. Broadway St. The two were pulled over at East Unaka Avenue and Eddie Williams Road shortly after the 1:24 a.m. incident.
According to the court document, a white male entered the store around 1:24 a.m. and had his hand in his jacket pocket.
In a news release on the incident, police also said Fulwiler went into the market, approached an employee from behind and stuck an object in the employee’s back. The employee believed the object was a handgun. Fulwiler demanded money from the employee before running out of the store.
The employee gave police a description of the getaway vehicle, and it was found a short time later being driven by Scheidt with Fulwiler as the passenger, police said.
As the investigation progressed, police found a grayish blue hoodie on East Unaka Avenue and a red necktie and dark-colored cap were found on Prince Street near East Myrtle Avenue.
All the clothing was located “along a route that suspects could have taken to get to where they were seen,” by officers just before the arrests, according to the court record.
Officers took Fulwiler and Scheidt back to the store where the employee identified Fulwiler as the man who had attempted the robbery.
As officers were leaving the store, they said Scheidt made the voluntary statement, “I shouldn’t have let him do it.”
Fulwiler and Scheidt were jailed in the Washington County Detention Center. Both were set to appear Tuesday in Sessions Court.
